Aftercare & Healing

Your healing guide.

Keep this page — it covers the timeline, daily care, and when to message us. Helping you heal is part of the service.

The healing timeline

  1. Day 1

    A little sore is normal

Some tenderness, warmth, or light swelling is expected. Leave the jewelry alone and keep the area dry.

  2. Weeks 1–2

    Clean, don't touch

Rinse with sterile saline when needed. Don't twist, turn, or sleep on it. Crusties are normal — soak them off, never pick.

  3. Months 1–3

    Looks healed, isn't yet

The surface heals before the inside does. Keep the routine going and don't change jewelry early — this is when most bumps start.

  4. Full healing

    Time depends on placement

Lobes settle in about 6–8 weeks; cartilage can take 6–12 months. Message us before your first jewelry change — we'll guide you, or do it for you.

Every day

  • Wash your hands before touching your piercing
  • Clean with NeilMed mist or sterile 0.9% saline, when needed
  • Let it heal naturally — minimal contact is best
  • Sleep on the opposite side, or use a travel pillow
  • Keep hair and clothing away from the piercing
  • Pat the area dry with clean tissue after showering

While it heals, avoid

  • Don't touch, twist, or play with the jewelry
  • No alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Betadine, or homemade saltwater
  • No ointments, oils, makeup, or skincare near the piercing
  • Don't remove or change jewelry early — unless we recommend downsizing
  • No pools, beaches, or hot tubs while healing
  • Don't let pets lick or touch it

What to clean with

NeilMed isn't required — your body knows how to heal, and overcleaning causes more problems than it solves. But a sterile saline spray keeps the area clean, especially around dust, sweat, or commutes. Never use homemade saltwater: wrong concentrations burn the skin and delay healing.

Pain & healing questions

Does it hurt?

Less than most people expect. The piercing itself takes a few seconds — most clients describe a quick pinch followed by warmth. Lobes are the gentlest; cartilage pinches a bit more. Being relaxed, well-fed, and well-rested genuinely helps.

How long does healing take?

It depends on placement. Lobes usually settle in 6–8 weeks, while cartilage piercings like the helix or conch can take 6–12 months to fully heal. Every service in our price list shows its typical healing time.

How do I clean my piercing?

Sterile 0.9% saline or NeilMed piercing mist, when needed — and nothing else. No alcohol, no Betadine, no homemade saltwater. Don't twist or rotate the jewelry, and keep it dry the rest of the time. You'll get a full walkthrough at your appointment.

What if a bump forms?

Don't panic, and don't pick at it. Bumps are common and usually treatable. Message us a photo and we'll advise — bump treatment with piercing disc insertion is one of our regular services.
